Our recommended stapler is the HD 3DF Flat Clinch. It uses 3/8" heavy duty staples.
TIP: If you're not using a flat staple, use a small hammer after pages are stapled, to take the curves out of the staple legs, making them flat against the endsheets. This helps prevent staples popping out when covers are over extended by little ones.
If your stapler is jamming, it's likely due to the staples used. The staplers that are sold at Walmart look ok but keep in mind, that staples from one maker will usually jam in another brands stapler. Maybe some staplers have less precision than others, but I know that with the right combo, jamming shouldn't be an issue. Let me know.
The staples should be in about 1/8 inch from the edge. Also, the slide guide on most staplers will not come forward enough thereby putting the staples a bit too deep on the book. This tends to make the books stiffer to open and can put more pressure on the staples to pop out of the sticky endsheet. So the position of the row of staples is important.
